GSFC Celebrates 50th Anniversary

ATLANTA - On October 9, friends and staff of the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) celebrated 50 years of service to the people of Georgia. GSFC is the state agency that administers the HOPE Scholarship and Grant Program, as well as other state- and lottery-funded financial aid programs.

GSFC, originally called the State Scholarship Commission, was created by the Georgia General Assembly in 1965. Although the programs and services administered have changed over the past 50 years, GSFC’s mission to promote and increase access to education beyond high school for Georgians has remained the same. Today, GSFC awards more than $650 million dollars in student financial aid to more than 100,000 Georgians for college expenses every year.

“Over the past 50 years, the Georgia Student Finance Commission has provided millions of students with financial assistance to pursue a postsecondary education and improve their lives,” said Tricia P. Chastain, President of GSFC. “Today’s event was a tribute to GSFC’s long-standing commitment to improving postsecondary success in Georgia.”

Today’s event was attended by Governor Nathan Deal, First Lady Sandra Deal, State School Superintendent Richard Woods, University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby, Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Gretchin Corbin, Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning Commissioner Amy Jacobs, current GSFC staff and Board members, former employees, and representatives from postsecondary institutions from across Georgia.

Brief remarks were provided by Mr. Don Howard, Chair of the GSFC Board of Commissioners; William “Bill” Flook, retired GSFC employee; Cadet Nathaniel Cutler, University of North Georgia Brigade Commander; Tricia P. Chastain, current GSFC President; and the Honorable Nathan Deal, 82nd Governor of Georgia.
